Sony A7S II versus Canon 5D Mark IV

The Sony Alpha 7S II and the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2015 and August 2016. The A7S II is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the 5D Mark IV is a DSLR. Both cameras are equipped with a full frame sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 30.1 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 5D Mark IV is considerably larger (44 percent) than the Sony A7S II. Moreover, the 5D Mark IV is substantially heavier (42 percent) than the A7S II. Cameras that are aimed at professionals or semi-pros tend to be a bit bulkier in order to give them the necessary environmental and shock resistance. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The A7S II was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 14 percent) than the 5D Mark IV, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Sensor comparison

Both cameras under consideration feature a full frame sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the 5D Mark IV is 2 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 30.1MP, the 5D Mark IV offers a higher resolution than the A7S II (12MP), but the 5D Mark IV has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.36μm versus 8.40μm for the A7S II). Yet, the 5D Mark IV is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 months) than the A7S II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the 5D Mark IV has a markedly higher DXO score than the A7S II (overall score 6 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 1.2 bits higher color depth, 0.3 EV in additional dynamic range, and -0 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
