Panasonic G7 versus Canon G7 X Mark II
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 and the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in May 2015 and February 2016. The G7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the G7X Mark II is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (G7) and an one-inch sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 15.8 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 20 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon G7 X Mark II is considerably smaller (40 percent) than the Panasonic G7. Cameras that are intended for semi-professional or professional use are sometimes a bit bulkier in order to provide them with the necessary ruggedness. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the G7 nor the G7X Mark II are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G7X Mark II has a lens build in, whereas the G7 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic G7 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Canon G7 X Mark II an one-inch sensor. The sensor area in the G7X Mark II is 48 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 2.7. The sensor in the G7 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the G7X Mark II offers a 3:2 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the G7X Mark II offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 15.8 MP of the G7. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 3.77μm for the G7). However, it should be noted that the G7X Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 9 months) than the G7, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the G7 provides a higher video resolution than the G7X Mark II. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the G7 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. The G7X Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the G7 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the G7 was succeeded by the Panasonic G85.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Is the Panasonic G7 better than the Canon G7 X Mark II or vice versa? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Reasons to prefer the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7:
- Better low-light imaging: Features bigger pixels on a larger sensor for better high-ISO images.
- Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/60p).
