Fujifilm X-E2S versus Panasonic G7
The Fujifilm X-E2S and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2016 and May 2015. Both the X-E2S and the G7 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-E2S) and a Four Thirds (G7) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic G7 is notably larger (11 percent) than the Fujifilm X-E2S. Moreover, the G7 is markedly heavier (17 percent) than the X-E2S. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-E2S nor the G7 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G7 was somewhat cheaper (by 7 percent) than the X-E2S at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-E2S vs Panasonic G7
The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-E2S features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic G7 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the G7 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-E2S has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G7 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 16MP, the X-E2S offers a slightly higher resolution than the G7 (15.8MP), but the X-E2S nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 3.77μm for the G7) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X-E2S is a somewhat more recent model (by 7 months) than the G7, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-E2S has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the G7 provides a better video resolution than the X-E2S. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/60p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. Both the X-E2S and the G7 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The G7 was replaced by the Panasonic G85, while the X-E2S was followed by the Fujifilm X-E3.
Review summary: Fujifilm X-E2S vs Panasonic G7
So how do things add up? Is there a clear favorite between the Fujifilm X-E2S and the Panasonic G7? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Reasons to prefer the Fujifilm X-E2S:
- Maximized detail: Lacks an anti-alias filter to exploit the sensor's full resolution potential.
- Better image quality: Features a larger and more technologically advanced imaging sensor.
- Less heavy: Is lighter (by 60g or 15 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
- More modern: Is somewhat more recent (announced 7 months after the G7).
Advantages of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7:
- Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
- Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/60p).
- More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.

- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in May 2015).
If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the G7 comes out slightly ahead of the X-E2S (5 : 4 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.
In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the X-E2S or the G7 handle or perform in practice.
