Fujifilm X-E1 versus Panasonic GX1

The Fujifilm X-E1 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in September 2012 and November 2011. Both the X-E1 and the GX1 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-E1) and a Four Thirds (GX1) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GX1 is notably smaller (18 percent) than the Fujifilm X-E1. Moreover, the GX1 is markedly lighter (9 percent) than the X-E1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-E1 nor the GX1 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Mirrorless cameras, such as the two under consideration, have the additional advantage of having a short flange to focal plane distance, which makes it possible to mount many lenses from other systems onto the camera via adapters.

Concerning battery life, the X-E1 gets 350 shots out of its NP-W126 battery, while the GX1 can take 320 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLD10 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The GX1 was somewhat cheaper (by 5 percent) than the X-E1 at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-E1 vs Panasonic GX1

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-E1 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic GX1 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the GX1 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-E1 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GX1 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 16MP, the X-E1 offers a slightly higher resolution than the GX1 (15.8MP), but the X-E1 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 3.77μm for the GX1) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X-E1 is a somewhat more recent model (by 9 months) than the GX1, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-E1 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the GX1 provides a faster frame rate than the X-E1. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/24p.

Both the X-E1 and the GX1 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The GX1 was replaced by the Panasonic GX7, while the X-E1 was followed by the Fujifilm X-E2.

Advantages of the Fujifilm X-E1:

Reasons to prefer the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1:

  • Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
  • Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (1080/60p versus 1080/24p).
  • Larger screen: Has a bigger rear LCD (3.0" vs 2.8") for image review and settings control.
  • Fewer buttons to press: Has a touchscreen to facilitate handling and shooting adjustments.
  • More compact: Is smaller (116x68mm vs 129x75mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in November 2011).

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the GX1 comes out slightly ahead of the X-E1 (6 : 5 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
