Fujifilm X-A2 vs X-A5
The Fujifilm X-A2 and the Fujifilm X-A5 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2015 and January 2018. Both the X-A2 and the X-A5 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X-A2 has a resolution of 16 megapixels, whereas the X-A5 provides 24 MP.

The X-A2 can be obtained in three different colors (black, brown, white), while the X-A5 is also available in three color-versions, but different ones (silver, brown, pink).
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-A5 is somewhat larger (1 percent) than the Fujifilm X-A2. Moreover, the X-A5 is slightly heavier (3 percent) than the X-A2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-A2 nor the X-A5 are weather-sealed.

Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
With 24MP, the X-A5 offers a higher resolution than the X-A2 (16MP), but the X-A5 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 4.80μm for the X-A2). Yet, the X-A5 is a much more recent model (by 3 years) than the X-A2, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X-A5 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X-A5 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 30 x 20 inches or 76.2 x 50.8 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 24 x 16 inches or 61 x 40.6 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20 x 13.3 inches or 50.8 x 33.9 cm. The corresponding values for the Fujifilm X-A2 are 24.5 x 16.3 inches or 62.2 x 41.5 cm for good quality, 19.6 x 13.1 inches or 49.7 x 33.2 cm for very good quality, and 16.3 x 10.9 inches or 41.5 x 27.6 cm for excellent quality prints.
The X-A5 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Fujifilm X-A2 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm X-A5 are ISO 200 to ISO 12800, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 200-51200.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the X-A5 provides a better video resolution than the X-A2. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/15p, while the X-A2 is limited to 1080/30p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The X-A5 has a touchscreen, while the X-A2 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.Both cameras have an articulated rear screen that can be turned to be front-facing. The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. It is notable that the X-A5 has a microphone port, which can help to improve the quality of audio recordings by attaching an external microphone. The X-A2 does not feature such a mic input.
Both the X-A2 and the X-A5 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The X-A2 was replaced by the Fujifilm X-A3, while the X-A5 does not have a direct successor.
