Panasonic GH1 versus Panasonic LX100
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 are two enthusiast cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in March 2009 and September 2014. The GH1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the LX100 is a fixed lens compact. Both cameras are equipped with a Four Thirds sensor. The GH1 has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the LX100 provides 12.7 MP.
The side-by-side display below illustrates the physical size and weight of the Panasonic GH1 and the Panasonic LX100. Three successive views from the front, the top, and the rear are shown. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX100 is notably smaller (32 percent) than the Panasonic GH1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the GH1 nor the LX100 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the LX100 has a lens build in, whereas the GH1 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The LX100 was launched at a lower price than the GH1, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature a Four Thirds sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 2.0. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.
While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the LX100 offers a slightly higher resolution of 12.7 megapixel, compared with 12 MP of the GH1. This megapixel advantage translates into a 3 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the LX100 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 4.21μm versus 4.33μm for the GH1). However, it should be noted that the LX100 is much more recent (by 5 years and 6 months) than the GH1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size.
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar image quality. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the LX100 provides a better video resolution than the GH1. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the GH1 is limited to 1080/24p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The two cameras under review are similar with respect to both having an electronic viewfinder. However, the one in the LX100 offers a substantially higher resolution than the one in the GH1 (2764k vs 1440k dots). The LX100 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the GH1 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the GH1 was succeeded by the Panasonic GH2 .
So how do things add up? Is the Panasonic GH1 better than the Panasonic LX100 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Reasons to prefer the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1:
- Better low-light sensitivity: Requires less light for good images (0.5 stops ISO advantage).
- More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
- More flexible: Accepts interchangeable lenses, so that lens characteristics can be altered.
- More heavily discounted: Has been available for much longer (launched in March 2009).
Advantages of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100:
- More dynamic range: Captures a broader range of light and dark details (0.9 EV of extra DR).
- Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/24p).
- More detailed viewfinder: Has higher resolution electronic viewfinder (2764k vs 1440k dots).
- More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (921k vs 460k dots).
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (11 vs 3 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- Ready to shoot: Has an integrated lens, whereas the GH1 necessitates an extra lens.
- More compact: Is smaller (115x66mm vs 124x90mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
- More affordable: Was introduced at a lower price, despite coming with a build-in lens.
- More modern: Reflects 5 years and 6 months of technical progress since the GH1 launch.
If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the LX100 is the clear winner of the contest (9 : 4 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the GH1 or the LX100 handle or perform in practice. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is why expert reviews are important. The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
