Panasonic G7 versus Canon T5i
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 and the Canon EOS Rebel T5i (labelled Canon 700D in some countries) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in May 2015 and March 2013. The G7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the T5i is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a Four Thirds (G7) and an APS-C (T5i) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 15.8 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 17.9 MP. Body comparison: Panasonic G7 vs Canon T5i

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon T5i is notably larger (24 percent) than the Panasonic G7. Moreover, the T5i is substantially heavier (41 percent) than the G7. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the G7 nor the T5i are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Panasonic G7 vs Canon T5i
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic G7 features a Four Thirds sensor and the Canon T5i an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the T5i is 48 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.0 and 1.6. The sensor in the G7 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the T5i offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 17.9MP, the T5i offers a higher resolution than the G7 (15.8MP), but the T5i nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 3.77μm for the G7) due to its larger sensor. However, the G7 is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 1 month) than the T5i, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the G7 provides a higher video resolution than the T5i. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/30p.

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the G7 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the T5i has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. Both the G7 and the T5i have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The T5i was replaced by the Canon T6i, while the G7 was followed by the Panasonic G85.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is the Panasonic G7 better than the Canon T5i or vice versa? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.
Arguments in favor of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7:
- Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/30p).
- More framing info: Has an electronic viewfinder that displays shooting data.
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (7 vs 5 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- More compact: Is smaller (125x86mm vs 133x100mm) and thus needs less room in the bag.
- Less heavy: Is lighter (by 170g or 29 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
- More legacy lens friendly: Can take a broad range of non-native lenses via adapters.
- More modern: Reflects 2 years and 1 month of technical progress since the T5i launch.
Advantages of the Canon EOS Rebel T5i:
- More detail: Has more megapixels (17.9 vs 15.8MP), which boosts linear resolution by 8%.
- Better low-light imaging: Features bigger pixels on a larger sensor for better high-ISO images.
- Brighter framing: Features an optical viewfinder for clear, lag-free composition.
- Longer lasting: Gets more shots (440 versus 350) out of a single battery charge.
- More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in March 2013).
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the G7 emerges as the winner of the contest (7 : 5 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the G7 or the T5i. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
