Nikon D7500 versus Olympus E-M5 II

The Nikon D7500 and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in April 2017 and February 2015. The D7500 is a DSLR, while the E-M5 II is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (D7500) and a Four Thirds sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 20.7 megapixel, whereas the Olympus provides 15.9 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-M5 II is notably smaller (25 percent) than the Nikon D7500. Moreover, the E-M5 II is substantially lighter (35 percent) than the D7500. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The E-M5 II was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 15 percent) than the D7500, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon D7500 features an APS-C sensor and the Olympus E-M5 II a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-M5 II is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the D7500 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the E-M5 II offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 20.7MP, the D7500 offers a higher resolution than the E-M5 II (15.9MP), but the D7500 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.22μm versus 3.76μm for the E-M5 II) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the D7500 is a somewhat more recent model (by 2 years and 2 months) than the E-M5 II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

Unlike the D7500, the E-M5 II has the capacity to capture high quality composite images (40MP) by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Of the two cameras under review, the D7500 provides substantially higher image quality than the E-M5 II, with an overall score that is 13 points higher. This advantage is based on 1.3 bits higher color depth, 1.5 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.8 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the D7500 provides a higher video resolution than the E-M5 II.
