Fujifilm X10 versus Fujifilm X-E1
The Fujifilm X10 and the Fujifilm X-E1 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2011 and September 2012. The X10 is a fixed lens compact, while the X-E1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a 2/3 (X10) and an APS-C (X-E1) sensor. The X10 has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the X-E1 provides 16 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-E1 is notably larger (18 percent) than the Fujifilm X10. Yet, the two cameras share the same weight. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X10 nor the X-E1 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X10 has a lens build in, whereas the X-E1 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X10 was launched at a lower price than the X-E1, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X10 vs Fujifilm X-E1
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X10 features a 2/3 sensor and the Fujifilm X-E1 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X-E1 is 534 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 3.9 and 1.5. The sensor in the X10 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the X-E1 offers a 3:2 aspect.
With 16MP, the X-E1 offers a higher resolution than the X10 (12MP), but the X-E1 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 2.20μm for the X10) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X-E1 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the X10, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the X10 provides a higher frame rate than the X-E1. It can shoot video footage at 1080/30p, while the X-E1 is limited to 1080/24p.

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the X-E1 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the X10 has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. Both the X10 and the X-E1 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The X10 was replaced by the Fujifilm X20, while the X-E1 was followed by the Fujifilm X-E2.

So how do things add up? Is the Fujifilm X10 better than the Fujifilm X-E1 or vice versa? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.
Reasons to prefer the Fujifilm X10:

However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the X10 or the X-E1 handle or perform in practice. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
