Fujifilm X-T3 versus Panasonic GF7

The Fujifilm X-T3 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF7 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2018 and January 2015. Both the X-T3 and the GF7 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-T3) and a Four Thirds (GF7) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 26 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.8 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GF7 is considerably smaller (44 percent) than the Fujifilm X-T3. Moreover, the GF7 is substantially lighter (51 percent) than the X-T3. It is worth mentioning in this context that the X-T3 is splash and dust resistant, while the GF7 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Concerning battery life, the X-T3 gets 390 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the GF7 can take 230 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLH7 power pack.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The GF7 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 67 percent) than the X-T3, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-T3 vs Panasonic GF7

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-T3 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic GF7 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the GF7 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-T3 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GF7 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 26MP, the X-T3 offers a higher resolution than the GF7 (15.8MP), but the X-T3 has marginally smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 3.77μm for the GF7). However, the X-T3 is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 years and 7 months) than the GF7, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-T3 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The X-T3 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

X-T3 versus GF7 MP

For many cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the X-T3 provides a higher video resolution than the GF7. It can shoot video footage at 4K/60p, while the Panasonic is limited to 1080/60p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The GF7 has one, while the X-T3 does not. While the build-in flash of the GF7 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, both cameras feature an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the X-T3 and the GF7 write their imaging data to SDXC cards. The X-T3 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the GF7 only has one slot.

The X-T3 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Fujifilm. In contrast, the GF7 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the GF7 was succeeded by the Panasonic GX850.

  • More compact: Is smaller (107x65mm vs 133x93mm) and will fit more readily into a bag.
  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 273g or 51 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
  • Easier fill-in: Has a small integrated flash to brighten shadows of backlit subjects.
  • Easier device pairing: Supports NFC for fast wireless image transfer over short distances.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (67 percent cheaper at launch).
