Fujifilm X-T2 versus Sony A7 II

The Fujifilm X-T2 and the Sony Alpha A7 II are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in July 2016 and November 2014. Both the X-T2 and the A7 II are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-T2) and a full frame (A7 II) sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 24 megapixel. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-T2 and the Sony A7 II are of equal size. However, the A7 II is markedly heavier (18 percent) than the X-T2. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Mirrorless cameras, such as the two under consideration, have the additional advantage of having a short flange to focal plane distance, which makes it possible to mount many lenses from other systems onto the camera via adapters.

Concerning battery life, the X-T2 gets 340 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the A7 II can take 350 images on a single charge of its NP-FW50 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X-T2 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 20 percent) than the A7 II, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-T2 vs Sony A7 II

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-T2 features an APS-C sensor and the Sony A7 II a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the A7 II is 133 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Even though the A7 II has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 24 megapixel. This implies that the A7 II has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 5.97μm versus 3.92μm for the X-T2), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the X-T2 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 7 months) than the A7 II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-T2 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the X-T2 provides a higher video resolution than the A7 II. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Sony is limited to 1080/60p.

One feature that differentiates the A7 II and the X-T2 is in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The A7 II reduces the risk of handshake-induced blur with all attached lenses, while the X-T2 has to rely on optical image stabilization in OIS-equipped lenses to achieve the same effect.

The X-T2 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the A7 II uses SDXC or Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. The X-T2 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the A7 II only has one slot.

Both the X-T2 and the A7 II have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The A7 II was replaced by the Sony A7 III, while the X-T2 was followed by the Fujifilm X-T3 .

  • More dynamic range: Capable of capturing a wider spectrum of light and dark details.
  • Better low-light sensitivity: Can be used in poorly lit environments and still produce good images.
  • Better sound control: Has a headphone port that enables audio monitoring while recording.
  • More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (1230k vs 1040k dots).
  • Sharper images: Has stabilization technology build-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the A7 II emerges as the winner of the match-up (10 : 8 points).
