Fujifilm X-A2 versus Olympus PEN-F
The Fujifilm X-A2 and the Olympus PEN-F are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2015 and January 2016. Both the X-A2 and the PEN-F are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-A2) and a Four Thirds (PEN-F) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the Olympus provides 20.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus PEN-F is notably larger (15 percent) than the Fujifilm X-A2. Moreover, the PEN-F is markedly heavier (22 percent) than the X-A2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-A2 nor the PEN-F are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Mirrorless cameras, such as the two under consideration, have the additional advantage of having a short flange to focal plane distance, which makes it possible to mount many lenses from other systems onto the camera via adapters.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X-A2 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 67 percent) than the PEN-F, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-A2 vs Olympus PEN-F
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-A2 features an APS-C sensor and the Olympus PEN-F a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the PEN-F is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-A2 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the PEN-F offers a 4:3 aspect.
Despite having a smaller sensor, the PEN-F offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixel, compared with 16 MP of the X-A2. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.34μm versus 4.80μm for the X-A2). However, it should be noted that the PEN-F is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the X-A2, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the PEN-F has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
Unlike the X-A2, the PEN-F has the capacity to capture high quality composite images (40MP) by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the PEN-F provides a faster frame rate than the X-A2. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The PEN-F is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X-A2 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X-A2 was succeeded by the Fujifilm X-A3.

So what is the bottom line? Is there a clear favorite between the Fujifilm X-A2 and the Olympus PEN-F? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.
Reasons to prefer the Fujifilm X-A2:

However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.
In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the X-A2 or the PEN-F handle or perform in practice.
