Fujifilm X-A10 versus Fujifilm X-A3

The Fujifilm X-A10 and the Fujifilm X-A3 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in December 2016 and August 2016. Both the X-A10 and the X-A3 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The X-A10 has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the X-A3 provides 24 MP. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.

Body comparison: Fujifilm X-A10 vs Fujifilm X-A3

An illustration of the physical size and weight of the Fujifilm X-A10 and the Fujifilm X-A3 is provided in the side-by-side display below. Three consecutive perspectives from the front, the top, and the back are presented. All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If you prefer, you can also use the toggle button to switch to a comparison in percentage terms (in this case, the camera on the left side – the X-A10 – represents the basis for the calculations across all the size and weight measures).

In this particular case, the Fujifilm X-A10 and the Fujifilm X-A3 have exactly the same width and height, and, thus, have identically-sized bodies. However, the X-A3 is slightly heavier (2 percent) than the X-A10. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-A10 nor the X-A3 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. In this particular case, both cameras feature the same lens mount, so that they can use the same lenses. You can find an overview of suitable optics in the Fujinon X Lens Catalog. Mirrorless cameras, such as the two under consideration, have the additional advantage of having a short flange to focal plane distance, which makes it possible to mount many lenses from other systems onto the camera via adapters.

The table below summarizes the key physical specs of the two cameras alongside a broader set of comparators. If you want to switch the focus of the display and review another camera pair, just select a new right or left comparator from among the camera models in the table. Alternatively, you can also move across to the CAM-parator tool and choose from the broad selection of possible camera comparisons there.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The two cameras under review were launched at the same price and fall into the same market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-A10 vs Fujifilm X-A3

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Fujifilm X-A10 and Fujifilm X-A3 sensor measures

With 24MP, the X-A3 offers a higher resolution than the X-A10 (16MP), but the X-A3 has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 4.80μm for the X-A10). It is noteworthy in this context that the X-A10 is a somewhat more recent model (by 3 months) than the X-A3, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the X-A3 provides a faster frame rate than the X-A10. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the X-A10 is limited to 1080/30p.

Feature comparison: Fujifilm X-A10 vs Fujifilm X-A3

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The X-A10 and the X-A3 are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The images are, thus, framed using live view on the rear LCD. The adjacent table lists some of the other core features of the Fujifilm X-A10 and Fujifilm X-A3 along with similar information for a selection of comparators. The full specs-sheets can be found in the camera manual or, for example, in the dpreview camera hub.

Both the X-A10 and the X-A3 are current models that good online retailers will have in stock. You can check the latest prices, for example, at amazon. The X-A3 replaced the earlier Fujifilm X-A2, while the X-A10 followed on from the Fujifilm X-A3.

Review summary: Fujifilm X-A10 vs Fujifilm X-A3

So what is the bottom line? Is the Fujifilm X-A10 better than the Fujifilm X-A3 or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.

Arguments in favor of the Fujifilm X-A10:

  • More modern: Is somewhat more recent (announced 3 months after the X-A3).

Advantages of the Fujifilm X-A3:

  • More detail: Has more megapixels (24 vs 16MP), which boosts linear resolution by 23%.
  • Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (1080/60p versus 1080/30p).
  • Fewer buttons to press: Has a touchscreen to facilitate handling and shooting adjustments.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in August 2016).

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the X-A3 emerges as the winner of the match-up (4 : 1 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.

X-A10 01:04 X-A3

In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains incomplete and does no justice, for example, to the way the X-A10 or the X-A3 handle or perform in practice. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. This is why expert reviews are important. The adjacent table relays the overall verdicts of several of the most popular camera review sites (cameralabs, dpreview, ephotozine, imaging-resource, photographyblog). The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. Also, please note that some of the review sites have changed their methodology and reporting over time.
