Sony A6500 versus Panasonic G7

The Sony Alpha A6500 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in October 2016 and May 2015. Both the A6500 and the Lumix G7 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (A6500) and a Four Thirds sensor. The Sony has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 15.8 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic G7 is notably larger (34 percent) than the Sony A6500. However, the Lumix G7 is slightly lighter (9 percent) than the A6500. It is worth mentioning in this context that the A6500 is splash and dust resistant, while the Lumix G7 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The Lumix G7 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 54 percent) than the A6500, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony A6500 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic G7 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the Lumix G7 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the A6500 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the Lumix G7 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 24MP, the A6500 offers a higher resolution than the Lumix G7 (15.8MP), but the A6500 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.91μm versus 3.77μm for the Lumix G7) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the A6500 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 4 months) than the Lumix G7, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (4K/30p).

The A6500 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the Lumix G7 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the Lumix G7 was succeeded by the Panasonic G85.
