Panasonic G9 versus Panasonic L10

The Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC- L10 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in November 2017 and August 2007. The G9 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the L10 is a DSLR. Both cameras are equipped with a Four Thirds sensor. The G9 has a resolution of 20.2 megapixel, whereas the L10 provides 10 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic L10 is somewhat smaller (2 percent) than the Panasonic G9. Moreover, the L10 is markedly lighter (16 percent) than the G9. It is worth mentioning in this context that the G9 is splash and dust resistant, while the L10 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Both cameras have similarly sized sensors, but DSLRs have a larger flange-to-focal plane distance than mirrorless cameras, which imposes contraints on the optical engineering process and generally leads to bigger and heavier lenses. Mirrorless cameras, such as the Panasonic G9, have moreover the advantage that they have a relatively short flange to focal plane distance and can thus use many lenses from other systems via adapters.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The L10 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 65 percent) than the G9, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature a Four Thirds sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 2.0. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

Sensor size

While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the G9 offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixel, compared with 10 MP of the L10. This megapixel advantage translates into a 42 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the G9 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.34μm versus 4.74μm for the L10). In this context, it should be noted, however, that the G9 is much more recent (by 10 years and 2 months) than the L10, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the G9 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Unlike the L10, the G9 has the capacity to capture high quality composite images (80.6MP) by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The G9 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the L10 does not. The highest resolution format that the G9 can use is 4K/60p.

Feature comparison

The G9 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the L10 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the L10 from Panasonic.

  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 102g or 16 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
  • Longer lasting: Gets more shots (450 versus 400) out of a single battery charge.
  • Easier fill-in: Has a small integrated flash to brighten shadows of backlit subjects.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (65 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in August 2007).

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
