Panasonic FZ2000 versus Olympus E-M10

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ2000 (called Panasonic FZ2500 in some regions) and the Olympus OM-D E-M10 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2016 and January 2014. The FZ2000 is a fixed lens compact, while the E-M10 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an one-inch (FZ2000) and a Four Thirds (E-M10) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the Olympus provides 15.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-M10 is considerably smaller (31 percent) than the Panasonic FZ2000. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the FZ2000 nor the E-M10 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the FZ2000 has a lens build in, whereas the E-M10 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the FZ2000 gets 350 shots out of its DMW-BLC12 battery, while the E-M10 can take 320 images on a single charge of its BLS-5 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.


Sensor comparison: Panasonic FZ2000 vs Olympus E-M10

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic FZ2000 features an one-inch sensor and the Olympus E-M10 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-M10 is 94 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 2.0. The sensor in the FZ2000 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the E-M10 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Panasonic FZ2000 offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 15.9 MP of the Olympus E-M10. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 3.76μm for the E-M10). However, it should be noted that the FZ2000 is much more recent (by 2 years and 7 months) than the E-M10, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the E-M10 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the FZ2000 provides a higher video resolution than the E-M10. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Olympus is limited to 1080/30p.

The FZ2000 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the E-M10 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the E-M10 was succeeded by the Olympus E-M10 II.
