Leica X-U Typ 113 versus Leica M Typ 262

The Leica X-U (Typ 113) and the Leica M (Typ 262) are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in January 2016 and November 2015. The X-U Typ 113 is a fixed lens compact, while the M Typ 262 is a rangefinder-style mirrorless. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-U Typ 113) and a full frame (M Typ 262) sensor. The X-U Typ 113 has a resolution of 16.1 megapixel, whereas the M Typ 262 provides 23.7 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica X-U Typ 113 and the Leica M Typ 262 are of equal size. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments. More than that, the X-U Typ 113 is water-proof up to 3m and can, thus, be used for underwater photography.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The X-U Typ 113 was launched at a lower price than the M Typ 262, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Leica X-U Typ 113 vs Leica M Typ 262

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Leica X-U Typ 113 features an APS-C sensor and the Leica M Typ 262 a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the M Typ 262 is 131 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 23.7MP, the M Typ 262 offers a higher resolution than the X-U Typ 113 (16.1MP), but the M Typ 262 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.01μm versus 4.80μm for the X-U Typ 113) due to its larger sensor. It is noteworthy in this context that the two cameras were released in close succession, so that their sensors are from the same technological generation. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the M Typ 262 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The X-U Typ 113 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the M Typ 262 does not. The highest resolution format that the X-U Typ 113 can use is 1080/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X-U Typ 113 has one, while the M Typ 262 does not. While the build-in flash of the X-U Typ 113 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The X-U Typ 113 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the M Typ 262 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the M Typ 262 was succeeded by the Leica M10.
