Fujifilm X70 versus Fujifilm X10

The Fujifilm X70 and the Fujifilm X10 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2016 and September 2011. Both the X70 and the X10 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X70) and a 2/3 (X10) sensor. The X70 has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the X10 provides 12 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X10 is notably larger (13 percent) than the Fujifilm X70. Moreover, the X10 is slightly heavier (3 percent) than the X70. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X70 nor the X10 are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the X70 gets 330 shots out of its NP-95 battery, while the X10 can take 270 images on a single charge of its NP-50 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X10 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 25 percent) than the X70, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X70 vs Fujifilm X10

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X70 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm X10 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the X10 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 3.9. The sensor in the X70 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the X10 offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 16MP, the X70 offers a higher resolution than the X10 (12MP), but the X70 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 2.20μm for the X10) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X70 is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 years and 4 months) than the X10, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the X70 provides a higher frame rate than the X10. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the X10 is limited to 1080/30p.

The X10 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X70 comes with a build-in prime. The X10 has a 28-112mm f/2.0-2.8 optic and the X70 offers a 28mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the X70 and X10 provide the same view at the wide-angle end, but the X10 has less tele-photo reach at the long end. The X10 offers the faster maximum aperture.

Both the X70 and the X10 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The X10 was replaced by the Fujifilm X20, while the X70 was followed by the Fujifilm XF10.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Fujifilm X70 or the Fujifilm X10 – has the upper hand? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Reasons to prefer the Fujifilm X70:

  • Better light gathering: Has a lens with a wider maximum aperture (f/2.0 vs f/2.8).
  • Sharper images: Has stabilization technology build-in to reduce the impact of hand-shake.
  • More affordable: Was released into a lower priced segment (25 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in September 2011).

If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the X70 is the clear winner of the match-up (10 : 6 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.
