Fujifilm X100F versus Leica CL

The Fujifilm X100F and the Leica CL (Typ 7323) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2017 and November 2017. The X100F is a fixed lens compact, while the CL is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Leica provides 24.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica CL is notably larger (7 percent) than the Fujifilm X100F. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X100F nor the CL are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X100F has a lens build in, whereas the CL is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup.

Concerning battery life, the X100F gets 390 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the CL can take 220 images on a single charge of its BP-DC12 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X100F was launched at a lower price than the CL, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.


Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X100F vs Leica CL

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the CL is 1 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 24.1MP, the CL offers a higher resolution than the X100F (24MP), but the CL nevertheless has the same individual pixel size (pixel pitch of 3.92μm) as the X100F due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the CL is a somewhat more recent model (by 10 months) than the X100F, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the CL provides a better video resolution than the X100F. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/60p.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though.
