Fujifilm X-T30 vs XQ2
The Fujifilm X-T30 and the Fujifilm XQ2 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2019 and January 2015. The X-T30 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the XQ2 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-T30) and a 2/3 (XQ2) sensor. The X-T30 has a resolution of 26 megapixels, whereas the XQ2 provides 12 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm XQ2 is considerably smaller (40 percent) than the Fujifilm X-T30. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-T30 nor the XQ2 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the XQ2 has a lens built in, whereas the X-T30 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The XQ2 was launched at a lower price than the X-T30, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-T30 features an APS-C sensor and the Fujifilm XQ2 a 2/3 sensor. The sensor area in the XQ2 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 3.9. The sensor in the X-T30 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the XQ2 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 26MP, the X-T30 offers a higher resolution than the XQ2 (12MP), but the X-T30 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 2.20μm for the XQ2) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X-T30 is a much more recent model (by 4 years and 1 month) than the XQ2, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X-T30 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X-T30 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 31.2 x 20.8 inches or 79.2 x 52.8 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 25 x 16.6 inches or 63.4 x 42.3 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 20.8 x 13.9 inches or 52.8 x 35.2 cm. The corresponding values for the Fujifilm XQ2 are 20 x 15 inches or 50.8 x 38.1 cm for good quality, 16 x 12 inches or 40.6 x 30.5 cm for very good quality, and 13.3 x 10 inches or 33.9 x 25.4 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Fujifilm X-T30 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 160 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 80-51200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Fujifilm XQ2 are ISO 100 to ISO 12800 (no boost).
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the X-T30 provides a higher video resolution than the XQ2. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the XQ2 is limited to 1080/60p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the X-T30 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), which can be very helpful when shooting in bright sunlight. In contrast, the XQ2 relies on live view and the rear LCD for framing. Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the X-T30 and the XQ2 write their files to SDXC cards. Both cameras can use UHS-I cards, which provide for Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s.
