Fujifilm X-T20 versus Fujifilm X100F

The Fujifilm X-T20 and the Fujifilm X100F are two digital cameras that were announced in January 2017. The X-T20 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the X100F is a fixed lens compact. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 24 megapixel. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.

Body comparison: Fujifilm X-T20 vs Fujifilm X100F

An illustration of the physical size and weight of the Fujifilm X-T20 and the Fujifilm X100F is provided in the side-by-side display below. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three successive views from the front, the top, and the rear are shown. All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter. You can also toggle the display to switch to a percentage comparison if you prefer that the measures are being expressed in relative terms (in this case, the camera on the left side – the X-T20 – represents the basis for the calculations across all the size and weight measures).

Compare X-T20 versus X100F top
Compare X-T20 and X100F rear

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100F is somewhat smaller (3 percent) than the Fujifilm X-T20. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-T20 nor the X100F are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X100F has a lens build in, whereas the X-T20 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Attaching the latter will add extra weight and bulk to the setup. You can find an overview of optics for the X-T20 and their specifications in the Fujinon X Lens Catalog.

The following table provides a synthesis of the main physical specifications of the two cameras and other similar ones. If you would like to visualize and compare a different camera combination, just use the right or left arrows in the table to switch to the respective camera. Alternatively, you can also navigate to the CAM-parator app and make your selection from the full list of cameras there.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-T20 vs Fujifilm X100F

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of chip-set technology, the X-T20 uses a more advanced image processing engine (X-Processor Pro2) than the X100F (X-Processor Pro), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Fujifilm X-T20 and Fujifilm X100F sensor measures

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 24 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the X-T20 and the X100F have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. Moreover, the two cameras were released in close succession, so that their sensors are from the same technological generation. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

X-T20 versus X100F MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). The adjacent table reports on the physical sensor characteristics and the outcomes of the DXO sensor quality tests for a sample of comparator-cameras.

Both the X-T20 and the X100F are current models that good online retailers will have in stock. You can check the latest prices, for example, at amazon. The X-T20 replaced the earlier Fujifilm X-T10, while the X100F followed on from the Fujifilm X100T.

Review summary: Fujifilm X-T20 vs Fujifilm X100F

So how do things add up? Is the Fujifilm X-T20 better than the Fujifilm X100F or vice versa? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.

Advantages of the Fujifilm X-T20:

  • Better jpgs: Has a more modern image processing engine (X-Processor Pro2 vs X-Processor Pro).
  • Better video: Provides higher definition movie capture (4K/30p vs 1080/60p).
  • More flexible LCD: Has a tilting screen for odd-angle shots in landscape orientation.
  • Fewer buttons to press: Is equipped with a touch-sensitive rear screen to facilitate handling.
  • More flexible: Accepts interchangeable lenses, so that lens characteristics can be altered.

Reasons to prefer the Fujifilm X100F:

  • Ready to shoot: Has an integrated lens, whereas the X-T20 necessitates an extra lens.
  • Longer lasting: Gets more shots (390 versus 350) out of a single battery charge.

If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the X-T20 emerges as the winner of the contest (5 : 2 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

X-T20 05:02 X100F

In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the X-T20 and the X100F in practical situations. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable. This is why expert reviews are important. The table below summarizes the assessments of some of the best known camera review sites (cameralabs, dpreview, ephotozine, imaging-resource, photographyblog). The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning. Also, please note that some of the review sites have changed their methodology and reporting over time.
