Fujifilm X-Pro2 versus Olympus E-M10 III

The Fujifilm X-Pro2 and the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2016 and August 2017. Both the X-Pro2 and the E-M10 III are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on an APS-C (X-Pro2) and a Four Thirds (E-M10 III) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Olympus provides 15.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-M10 III is notably smaller (12 percent) than the Fujifilm X-Pro2. Moreover, the E-M10 III is markedly lighter (17 percent) than the X-Pro2. It is worth mentioning in this context that the X-Pro2 is splash and dust resistant, while the E-M10 III does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The E-M10 III was launched at a markedly lower price (by 62 percent) than the X-Pro2, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-Pro2 vs Olympus E-M10 III

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-Pro2 features an APS-C sensor and the Olympus E-M10 III a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-M10 III is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-Pro2 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the E-M10 III offers a 4:3 aspect.

With 24MP, the X-Pro2 offers a higher resolution than the E-M10 III (15.9MP), but the X-Pro2 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 3.76μm for the E-M10 III) due to its larger sensor. However, the E-M10 III is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 7 months) than the X-Pro2, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

The X-Pro2 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the E-M10 III provides a better video resolution than the X-Pro2. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/60p.

One differentiating feature between the two cameras concerns the touch sensitivity of the rear screen. The E-M10 III has a touchscreen, while the X-Pro2 has a conventional panel. Touch control can be particularly helpful, for example, for setting the focus point.

Both the X-Pro2 and the E-M10 III write their imaging data to SDXC cards. The X-Pro2 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the E-M10 III only has one slot.
