Fujifilm X-M1 versus Leica S Typ 006

The Fujifilm X-M1 and the Leica S (Typ 006) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in June 2013 and September 2012. The X-M1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the S Typ 006 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-M1) and a medium format (S Typ 006) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the Leica provides 37.5 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica S Typ 006 is considerably larger (145 percent) than the Fujifilm X-M1. Moreover, the S Typ 006 is substantially heavier (282 percent) than the X-M1. It is noteworthy in this context that the S Typ 006 is splash and dust-proof, while the X-M1 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The X-M1 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 97 percent) than the S Typ 006, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-M1 vs Leica S Typ 006

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-M1 features an APS-C sensor and the Leica S Typ 006 a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the S Typ 006 is 267 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 0.8. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 37.5MP, the S Typ 006 offers a higher resolution than the X-M1 (16MP), but the S Typ 006 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.00μm versus 4.80μm for the X-M1) due to its larger sensor. However, the X-M1 is a somewhat more recent model (by 9 months) than the S Typ 006, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X-M1 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the S Typ 006 does not. The highest resolution format that the X-M1 can use is 1080/30p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X-M1 has one, while the S Typ 006 does not. While the build-in flash of the X-M1 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

Both the X-M1 and the S Typ 006 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The S Typ 006 was replaced by the Leica S Typ 007, while the X-M1 does not have a direct successor.

So how do things add up? Is there a clear favorite between the Fujifilm X-M1 and the Leica S Typ 006? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.

Advantages of the Fujifilm X-M1:

However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.

In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the X-M1 and the S Typ 006 in practical situations. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
