Fujifilm X-E2 versus Panasonic LX100

The Fujifilm X-E2 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2013 and September 2014. The X-E2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the LX100 is a fixed lens compact. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-E2) and a Four Thirds (LX100) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 12.7 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX100 is notably smaller (22 percent) than the Fujifilm X-E2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-E2 nor the LX100 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the LX100 has a lens build in, whereas the X-E2 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the X-E2 gets 350 shots out of its NP-W126 battery, while the LX100 can take 300 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLG10 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The LX100 was launched at a lower price than the X-E2, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-E2 vs Panasonic LX100

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-E2 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic LX100 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the LX100 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-E2 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the LX100 offers a 4:3 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

With 16MP, the X-E2 offers a higher resolution than the LX100 (12.7MP), but the X-E2 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 4.21μm for the LX100) due to its larger sensor. However, the LX100 is a somewhat more recent model (by 10 months) than the X-E2, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-E2 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

X-E2 versus LX100 MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the LX100 provides a better video resolution than the X-E2. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/60p.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the LX100 features an electronic shutter, which makes silent shooting and higher burst speeds possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The LX100 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X-E2 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X-E2 was succeeded by the Fujifilm X-E2S.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
