Fujifilm X-A3 versus Canon M100

The Fujifilm X-A3 and the Canon EOS M100 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in August 2016 and August 2017. Both the X-A3 and the EOS M100 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 24 megapixel.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon M100 is somewhat smaller (8 percent) than the Fujifilm X-A3. Moreover, the EOS M100 is markedly lighter (11 percent) than the X-A3. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-A3 nor the EOS M100 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X-A3 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 20 percent) than the EOS M100, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the EOS M100 is 10 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have format factors, respectively, of 1.5 (X-A3) and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Even though the X-A3 has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 24 megapixel. This implies that the X-A3 has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 3.72μm for the EOS M100), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the EOS M100 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year) than the X-A3, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/60p).

Summary

So how do things add up? Is the Fujifilm X-A3 better than the Canon M100 or vice versa? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Arguments in favor of the Fujifilm X-A3:

  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (410 versus 295) on a single battery charge.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced segment (20 percent cheaper at launch).

Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS M100:

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
