Fujifilm X-A2 versus Fujifilm X100T

The Fujifilm X-A2 and the Fujifilm X100T are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in January 2015 and September 2014. The X-A2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the X100T is a fixed lens compact. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 16 megapixel. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100T is notably larger (20 percent) than the Fujifilm X-A2. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-A2 nor the X100T are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X100T has a lens build in, whereas the X-A2 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the X-A2 gets 410 shots out of its NP-W126 battery, while the X100T can take 330 images on a single charge of its NP-95 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-A2 vs Fujifilm X100T

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.5. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

The two cameras under review do not only share the same sensor size, but also offer an identical resolution of 16 megapixel. This similarity in sensor specs implies that both the X-A2 and the X100T have the same pixel density, as well as the same pixel size. It should, however, be noted that the X-A2 is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 months) than the X100T, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100T has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the X100T provides a faster frame rate than the X-A2. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the X-A2 is limited to 1080/30p.

Both the X-A2 and the X100T have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The X100T was replaced by the Fujifilm X100F, while the X-A2 was followed by the Fujifilm X-A3.

So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Fujifilm X-A2 and the Fujifilm X100T? A synthesis of the relative strong points of each of the models is listed below.


Arguments in favor of the Fujifilm X-A2:

  • Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
  • More flexible LCD: Has a tilting screen for odd-angle shots in landscape orientation.
  • More flexible: Accepts interchangeable lenses, so that lens characteristics can be altered.

  • Longer lasting: Can take more shots (410 versus 330) on a single battery charge.

  • Ready to shoot: Has an integrated lens, whereas the X-A2 necessitates an extra lens.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in September 2014).

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when refering to cameras in the same category and of the same age. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
