Fujifilm GFX 50S versus Fujifilm X-Pro2

The Fujifilm GFX 50S and the Fujifilm X-Pro2 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2016 and January 2016. Both the GFX and the X-Pro2 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are based on a medium format (GFX) and an APS-C (X-Pro2) sensor. The GFX has a resolution of 51.1 megapixel, whereas the X-Pro2 provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X-Pro2 is notably smaller (16 percent) than the Fujifilm GFX 50S. Moreover, the X-Pro2 is markedly lighter (33 percent) than the GFX. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Hence, you might want to study the specifications of available lenses in order to get the full picture of the size and weight of the two camera systems.

Concerning battery life, the GFX gets 400 shots out of its NP-T125 battery, while the X-Pro2 can take 350 images on a single charge of its NP-W126 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The X-Pro2 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 74 percent) than the GFX, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm GFX 50S vs Fujifilm X-Pro2

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm GFX 50S features a medium format sensor and the Fujifilm X-Pro2 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the X-Pro2 is 75 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 1.5. The sensor in the GFX has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the X-Pro2 offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 51.1MP, the GFX offers a higher resolution than the X-Pro2 (24MP), but the GFX nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.33μm versus 3.92μm for the X-Pro2) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the GFX is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the X-Pro2, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

GFX versus X-Pro2 MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the X-Pro2 provides a faster frame rate than the GFX. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the GFX is limited to 1080/30p.

Reasons to prefer the Fujifilm GFX 50S:

  • Less heavy: Has a lower weight (by 245g or 33 percent) and is thus easier to take along.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (74 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in January 2016).

If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the GFX comes out slightly ahead of the X-Pro2 (9 : 8 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features before making a decision on a new camera.

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
