Canon SX740 versus Canon 4000D

The Canon PowerShot SX740 HS and the Canon EOS 4000D are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in July 2018 and February 2018. The SX740 is a fixed lens compact, while the 4000D is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a 1/2.3-inch (SX740) and an APS-C (4000D) sensor. The SX740 has a resolution of 20.2 megapixel, whereas the 4000D provides 17.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon 4000D is considerably larger (87 percent) than the Canon SX740. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the SX740 nor the 4000D are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the SX740 has a lens build in, whereas the 4000D is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon SX740 vs Canon 4000D

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon SX740 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Canon 4000D an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the 4000D is 1086 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.6. The sensor in the SX740 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the 4000D offers a 3:2 aspect.

In terms of chip-set technology, the SX740 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 8) than the 4000D (DIGIC 4+), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon SX740 and Canon 4000D sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon SX740 offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixel, compared with 17.9 MP of the Canon 4000D. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.18μm versus 4.31μm for the 4000D). However, it should be noted that the SX740 is a somewhat more recent model (by 5 months) than the 4000D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the SX740 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the SX740 provides a higher video resolution than the 4000D.
