Canon G16 versus Sony A6300

The Canon PowerShot G16 and the Sony Alpha A6300 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in August 2013 and February 2016. The G16 is a fixed lens compact, while the A6300 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a 1/1.7-inch (G16) and an APS-C (A6300) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 12 megapixel, whereas the Sony provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Sony A6300 is somewhat smaller (3 percent) than the Canon G16. It is noteworthy in this context that the A6300 is splash and dust-proof, while the G16 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G16 has a lens build in, whereas the A6300 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the G16 gets 360 shots out of its NB-10L battery, while the A6300 can take 400 images on a single charge of its NP-FW50 power pack.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The G16 was launched at a lower price than the A6300, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon G16 vs Sony A6300

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G16 features a 1/1.7-inch sensor and the Sony A6300 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the A6300 is 774 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 4.65 and 1.5. The sensor in the G16 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the A6300 offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 24MP, the A6300 offers a higher resolution than the G16 (12MP), but the A6300 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.91μm versus 1.87μm for the G16) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the A6300 is a much more recent model (by 2 years and 5 months) than the G16, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the A6300 offers substantially better image quality than the G16 (overall score 31 points higher). The advantage is based on 3.4 bits higher color depth, 2 EV in additional dynamic range, and 2.6 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the A6300 provides a better video resolution than the G16. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.

The G16 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the A6300 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the A6300 was succeeded by the Sony A6500.
