Canon G1 X Mark III versus Ricoh GR II

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III and the Ricoh GR II are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2017 and June 2015. Both the G1X Mark III and the GR II are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Ricoh provides 16.1 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Ricoh GR II is notably smaller (18 percent) than the Canon G1 X Mark III. Moreover, the GR II is substantially lighter (37 percent) than the G1X Mark III. It is worth mentioning in this context that the G1X Mark III is splash and dust resistant, while the GR II does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The GR II was launched at a markedly lower price (by 46 percent) than the G1X Mark III, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon G1 X Mark III vs Ricoh GR II

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the GR II is 11 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon G1 X Mark III offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 16.1 MP of the Ricoh GR II. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.79μm for the GR II). However, it should be noted that the G1X Mark III is much more recent (by 2 years and 4 months) than the GR II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GR II has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the G1X Mark III provides a higher frame rate than the GR II. The G1X Mark III is equipped with a zoom lens, while the GR II comes with a build-in prime. The G1X Mark III has a 24-72mm f/2.8-5.6 optic and the GR II offers a 28mm f/2.8 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms).
