Canon G1 X Mark III versus Nikon D7500

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III and the Nikon D7500 are two enthusiast cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2017 and April 2017. The G1X Mark III is a fixed lens compact, while the D7500 is a DSLR. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Nikon provides 20.7 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D7500 is considerably larger (58 percent) than the Canon G1 X Mark III. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G1X Mark III has a lens build in, whereas the D7500 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the G1X Mark III gets 200 shots out of its NB-13L battery, while the D7500 can take 950 images on a single charge of its EN-EL15a power pack.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon G1 X Mark III vs Nikon D7500

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the D7500 is 11 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Canon G1 X Mark III and Nikon D7500 sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon G1 X Mark III offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 20.7 MP of the Nikon D7500. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.22μm for the D7500). However, it should be noted that the G1X Mark III is a somewhat more recent model (by 6 months) than the D7500, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage.

The G1X Mark III has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in relatively fast and reliable autofocus acquisition during video recording.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the D7500 provides a better video resolution than the G1X Mark III. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.

One feature that is present on the D7500, but is missing on the G1X Mark III is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The above review scores should be interpreted with care, though. The ratings are only valid when referring to cameras in the same category and of the same age.
