Canon G1 X Mark III versus Leica X Vario

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III and the Leica X Vario (Typ 107) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in October 2017 and June 2013. Both the G1X Mark III and the X Vario are fixed lens compact cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Leica provides 16.1 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica X Vario is notably larger (8 percent) than the Canon G1 X Mark III. Moreover, the X Vario is substantially heavier (70 percent) than the G1X Mark III. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The G1X Mark III was launched at a markedly lower price (by 54 percent) than the X Vario, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. The sensor area in the X Vario is 12 percent bigger. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon G1 X Mark III offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 16.1 MP of the Leica X Vario. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.80μm for the X Vario). However, it should be noted that the G1X Mark III is much more recent (by 4 years and 4 months) than the X Vario, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the G1X Mark III provides a higher frame rate than the X Vario. Both the G1X Mark III and the X Vario have zoom lenses build in. The G1X Mark III has a 24-72mm f/2.8-5.6 optic and the X Vario offers a 28-70mm f/3.5-6.4 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms).
