Canon 6D Mark II versus Canon M

The Canon EOS 6D Mark II and the Canon EOS M are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in June 2017 and July 2012. The 6D Mark II is a DSLR, while the Canon M is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a full frame (6D Mark II) and an APS-C (Canon M) sensor. The 6D Mark II has a resolution of 26 megapixel, whereas the Canon M provides 17.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon M is considerably smaller (55 percent) than the Canon 6D Mark II. Moreover, the Canon M is substantially lighter (61 percent) than the 6D Mark II. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 6D Mark II is splash and dust resistant, while the Canon M does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Concerning battery life, the 6D Mark II gets 1200 shots out of its LP-E6N battery, while the Canon M can take 230 images on a single charge of its LP-E12 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The Canon M was launched at a markedly lower price (by 70 percent) than the 6D Mark II, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 6D Mark II vs Canon M

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 6D Mark II features a full frame sensor and the Canon M an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the Canon M is 61 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

In terms of chip-set technology, the 6D Mark II uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 7) than the Canon M (DIGIC V), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

With 26MP, the 6D Mark II offers a higher resolution than the Canon M (17.9MP), but the 6D Mark II nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 5.76μm versus 4.31μm for the Canon M) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the 6D Mark II is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 years and 11 months) than the Canon M, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.

6D Mark II versus Canon M MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the 6D Mark II provides substantially higher image quality than the Canon M, with an overall score that is 20 points higher. This advantage is based on 2.3 bits higher color depth, 0.7 EV in additional dynamic range, and 1.8 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the 6D Mark II provides a higher frame rate than the Canon M. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the Canon M is limited to 1080/30p.

One feature that is present on the 6D Mark II, but is missing on the Canon M is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The 6D Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the Canon M has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the Canon M was succeeded by the Canon EOS M3.

  • More legacy lens friendly: Can use many non-native lenses via adapters.
  • More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (70 percent cheaper at launch).
  • More heavily discounted: Has been around for much longer (launched in July 2012).

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review.
