Canon 5D versus Panasonic GX8

The Canon EOS 5D and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in August 2005 and July 2015. The 5D is a DSLR, while the GX8 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a full frame (5D) and a Four Thirds (GX8) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 12.7 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 20.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic GX8 is considerably smaller (40 percent) than the Canon 5D. Moreover, the GX8 is substantially lighter (46 percent) than the 5D. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. Mirrorless cameras, such as the GX8, have moreover the advantage that they can use many lenses from other systems via adapters, as they have a relatively short flange to focal plane distance.

Concerning battery life, the 5D gets 400 shots out of its BP-511A battery, while the GX8 can take 330 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLC12 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The GX8 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 64 percent) than the 5D, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon 5D vs Panasonic GX8

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 5D features a full frame sensor and the Panasonic GX8 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the GX8 is 74 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 2.0. The sensor in the 5D has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the GX8 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Canon 5D and Panasonic GX8 sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the GX8 offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixel, compared with 12.7 MP of the 5D. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.34μm versus 8.25μm for the 5D). However, it should be noted that the GX8 is much more recent (by 9 years and 11 months) than the 5D, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently.

5D versus GX8 MP

Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the GX8 has a markedly higher DXO score than the 5D (overall score 4 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 0.6 bits higher color depth, 1.5 EV in additional dynamic range, 0.8 stops of reduced low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The GX8 indeed provides for movie recording, while the 5D does not. The highest resolution format that the GX8 can use is 4K/30p.

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the GX8 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the 5D has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. Both the 5D and the GX8 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The 5D was replaced by the Canon 5D Mark II, while the GX8 was followed by the Panasonic GX9.

In any case, while the specs-based evaluation of cameras is instructive in revealing their potential as photographic tools, it remains partial and cannot reveal, for example, the handling experience and imaging performance when actually working with the 5D or the GX8. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and comparisons of ratings among very different cameras or across long time periods have little meaning.
