Canon 1D C vs Kodak S-1
The Canon EOS-1D C and the Kodak PixPro S-1 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in April 2012 and January 2012. The 1DC is a DSLR, while the S-1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on a full frame (1DC) and a Four Thirds (S-1) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixels, whereas the Kodak provides 16.1 MP.

The S-1 can be obtained in two different colors (black, white), while the 1DC is only available in black.
If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Kodak S-1 is considerably smaller (70 percent) than the Canon 1D C. Moreover, the S-1 is substantially lighter (81 percent) than the 1DC. It is worth mentioning in this context that the 1DC is splash and dust resistant, while the S-1 does not feature any corresponding weather-sealing.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. As can be seen in the images above, the 1DC has a battery grip built in. This facilitates image-taking in portrait orientation and gives it additional battery power. The power pack in the S-1 can be charged via the USB port, which can be very convenient when travelling.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The S-1 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 98 percent) than the 1DC, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon 1D C features a full frame sensor and the Kodak S-1 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the S-1 is 74 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.0 and 2.0. The sensor in the 1DC has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the S-1 offers a 4:3 aspect.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.
With 17.9MP, the 1DC offers a higher resolution than the S-1 (16.1MP), but the 1DC nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.95μm versus 3.74μm for the S-1) due to its larger sensor. It is noteworthy in this context that the two cameras were released in close succession, so that their sensors are from the same technological generation.
The resolution advantage of the Canon 1D C implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the 1DC for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 25.9 x 17.3 inches or 65.8 x 43.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 20.7 x 13.8 inches or 52.7 x 35.1 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 17.3 x 11.5 inches or 43.9 x 29.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Kodak S-1 are 23.2 x 17.4 inches or 58.9 x 44.2 cm for good quality, 18.6 x 13.9 inches or 47.1 x 35.4 cm for very good quality, and 15.5 x 11.6 inches or 39.3 x 29.5 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS-1D C has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 51200, which can be extended to ISO 50-204800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Kodak PixPro S-1 are ISO 200 to ISO 12800 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the 1DC provides a higher video resolution than the S-1. It can shoot video footage at 4K/24p, while the Kodak is limited to 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the 1DC has an optical viewfinder, which can be very useful when shooting in bright sunlight. One feature that is present on the 1DC, but is missing on the S-1 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.The S-1 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the 1DC does not have a selfie-screen.
The 1DC writes its imaging data to Compact Flash cards, while the S-1 uses SDXC cards. The 1DC features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the S-1 only has one slot.

It is notable that the 1DC has a microphone port, which is missing on the S-1. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
Studio photographers will appreciate that the Canon 1D C (unlike the S-1) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
The S-1 is a recent model that features in the current product line-up of Kodak. In contrast, the 1DC has been discontinued (but can be found pre-owned on eBay). There has not been a direct replacement model for the 1DC from Canon.
