Sony RX10 IV versus Canon 7D II
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV and the Canon EOS 7D Mark II are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2017 and September 2014. The RX10 IV is a fixed lens compact, while the 7D Mark II is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an one-inch (RX10 IV) and an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 20 megapixel.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the RX10 IV has a lens build in, whereas the 7D Mark II is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The RX10 IV was launched at a lower price than the 7D Mark II, despite having a lens build in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Sony RX10 IV features an one-inch sensor and the Canon 7D II an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the 7D Mark II is 190 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
Even though the 7D Mark II has a larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 20 megapixel. This implies that the 7D Mark II has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 4.10μm versus 2.41μm for the RX10 IV), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the RX10 IV is much more recent (by 2 years and 11 months) than the 7D Mark II, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.

Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the RX10 IV provides a higher video resolution than the 7D Mark II. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Canon is limited to 1080/60p.
