Panasonic TZ100 versus Olympus E-M10 II

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ100 (called Panasonic ZS100 in some regions) and the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2016 and August 2015. The TZ100 is a fixed lens compact, while the E-M10 II is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an one-inch (TZ100) and a Four Thirds (E-M10 II) sensor. The Panasonic has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the Olympus provides 15.9 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-M10 II is notably larger (38 percent) than the Panasonic TZ100. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the TZ100 nor the E-M10 II are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the TZ100 has a lens build in, whereas the E-M10 II is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The TZ100 was launched at a lower price than the E-M10 II, despite having a lens build in. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Panasonic TZ100 vs Olympus E-M10 II

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Panasonic TZ100 features an one-inch sensor and the Olympus E-M10 II a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-M10 II is 94 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.75 and 2.0. The sensor in the TZ100 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the E-M10 II offers a 4:3 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Panasonic TZ100 and Olympus E-M10 II sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Panasonic TZ100 offers a higher resolution of 20 megapixel, compared with 15.9 MP of the Olympus E-M10 II. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 2.41μm versus 3.76μm for the E-M10 II). However, it should be noted that the TZ100 is a somewhat more recent model (by 4 months) than the E-M10 II, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that partly offset its pixel-size disadvantage. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the E-M10 II has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for many cameras. This service determines an overall sensor rating, as well as sub-scores for low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and color depth ("DXO Portrait"). The Overall DXO ratings for the two cameras under consideration are close, suggesting that they provide similar image quality. Many modern cameras cannot only take still pictures, but also record videos. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the TZ100 provides a higher video resolution than the E-M10 II. It can shoot video footage at 4K/30p, while the Olympus is limited to 1080/60p.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the TZ100 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the TZ100 and the E-M10 II write their imaging data to SDXC cards.

Both the TZ100 and the E-M10 II have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The E-M10 II was replaced by the Olympus E-M10 III, while the TZ100 was followed by the Panasonic TZ200.
