Nikon D7000 versus Panasonic G9

The Nikon D7000 and the Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2010 and November 2017. The D7000 is a DSLR, while the G9 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. The cameras are based on an APS-C (D7000) and a Four Thirds (G9) sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 16.1 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 20.2 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic G9 is somewhat smaller (4 percent) than the Nikon D7000. Moreover, the G9 is markedly lighter (16 percent) than the D7000. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The D7000 was launched at a somewhat lower price (by 12 percent) than the G9, which makes it more attractive for photographers on a tight budget. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Nikon D7000 vs Panasonic G9

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Nikon D7000 features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic G9 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the G9 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the D7000 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the G9 offers a 4:3 aspect.

In terms of underlying technology, both cameras are build around CMOS sensors.

Nikon D7000 and Panasonic G9 sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the G9 offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixel, compared with 16.1 MP of the D7000. This megapixel advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.34μm versus 4.80μm for the D7000). However, it should be noted that the G9 is much more recent (by 7 years and 1 month) than the D7000, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that make it possible to gather light more efficiently. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the G9 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Unlike the D7000, the G9 has the capacity to capture high quality composite images (80.6MP) by combining multiple shots after shifting its sensor by miniscule distances. This multi-shot, pixel-shift mode is most suitable for photography of stationary objects (landscapes, studio scenes).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the G9 provides a better video resolution than the D7000. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/60p, while the Nikon is limited to 10800/24p.

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the G9 has an electronic viewfinder (3680k dots), while the D7000 has an optical one. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The D7000 has one, while the G9 does not. While the build-in flash of the D7000 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the G9 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the D7000 and the G9 write their imaging data to SDXC cards. Both cameras feature dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails.

The G9 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the D7000 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the D7000 was succeeded by the Nikon D7100.
