Nikon D600 versus Canon 6D Mark II
The Nikon D600 and the Canon EOS 6D Mark II are two enthusiast cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2012 and June 2017. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are equipped with a full frame sensor. The Nikon has a resolution of 24.2 megapixel, whereas the Canon provides 26 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Nikon D600 and the Canon 6D Mark IIare of equal size. However, the 6D Mark II is markedly lighter (10 percent) than the D600. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Yet, since both cameras are based around a full frame sensor, their respective lenses will tend to have similar dimensions and heft. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The 6D Mark II was somewhat cheaper (by 5 percent) than the D600 at launch, but both cameras fall into the same price category. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature a full frame sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.0. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the large-sensor cameras that aim for top notch image quality. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the 6D Mark II offers a slightly higher resolution of 26 megapixel, compared with 24.2 MP of the D600. This megapixel advantage translates into a 4 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the 6D Mark II has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 5.76μm versus 5.97μm for the D600). However, it should be noted that the 6D Mark II is much more recent (by 4 years and 9 months) than the D600, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that compensate for the smaller pixel size.
Consistent information on actual sensor performance is available from DXO Mark for most cameras. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under review, the D600 has a notably higher overall DXO score than the 6D Mark II (overall score 9 points higher), which gives it an advantage in terms of imaging quality. This advantage is based on 0.7 bits higher color depth, 2.3 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.1 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the 6D Mark II provides a faster frame rate than the D600. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the Nikon is limited to 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. The D600 and the 6D Mark II are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. The 6D Mark II is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the D600 has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on ebay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the D600 was succeeded by the Nikon D610.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Is the Nikon D600 better than the Canon 6D Mark II or vice versa? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Reasons to prefer the Nikon D600:
- Better image quality: Scores markedly higher (9 points) in the DXO overall assessment.
- More dynamic range: Captures a larger spectrum of light and dark details (2.3 EV of extra DR).
- Easier fill-in: Is equipped with a small onboard flash to brighten deep shadow areas.
- More heavily discounted: Has been available for much longer (launched in September 2012).
Advantages of the Canon EOS 6D Mark II:
- Better video: Provides higher movie framerates (1080/60p vs 1080/30p).
- More detailed LCD: Has a higher resolution rear screen (1040k vs 921k dots).
- More flexible LCD: Has swivel screen for odd-angle shots in portrait or landscape orientation.
- Fewer buttons to press: Has a touchscreen to facilitate handling and shooting adjustments.
- Faster burst: Shoots at higher frequency (6.5 vs 5.5 flaps/sec) to capture the decisive moment.
- Longer lasting: Gets more shots (1200 versus 900) out of a single battery charge.
- More modern: Reflects 4 years and 9 months of technical progress since the D600 launch.
If the count of individual advantages (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the 6D Mark II emerges as the winner of the match-up (7 : 4 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the D600 and the 6D Mark II in practical situations. User reviews that are available, for instance, at amazon can sometimes shed light on these issues, but such feedback is all too often partial, inconsistent, and inaccurate. The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense.
