Fujifilm X100T versus Leica Q Typ 116

The Fujifilm X100T and the Leica Q (Typ 116) are two enthusiast cameras that were announced, respectively, in September 2014 and June 2015. Both the X100T and the Q Typ 116 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X100T) and a full frame (Q Typ 116) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixel, whereas the Leica provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica Q Typ 116 is notably larger (11 percent) than the Fujifilm X100T. Moreover, the Q Typ 116 is substantially heavier (45 percent) than the X100T. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X100T nor the Q Typ 116 are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the X100T gets 330 shots out of its NP-95 battery, while the Q Typ 116 can take 300 images on a single charge of its BP-DC12 power pack.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X100T was launched at a markedly lower price (by 69 percent) than the Q Typ 116, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X100T vs Leica Q Typ 116

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X100T features an APS-C sensor and the Leica Q Typ 116 a full frame sensor. The sensor area in the Q Typ 116 is 135 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 1.0. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

Fujifilm X100T and Leica Q Typ 116 sensor measures

With 24MP, the Q Typ 116 offers a higher resolution than the X100T (16MP), but the Q Typ 116 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.00μm versus 4.80μm for the X100T) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the Q Typ 116 is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the X100T, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100T has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

X100T versus Q Typ 116 MP

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X100T has one, while the Q Typ 116 does not. While the build-in flash of the X100T is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the Q Typ 116 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

Both the X100T and the Q Typ 116 have build-in prime lenses. The X100T has a 35mm f/2.0 optic and the Q Typ 116 offers a 28mm f/1.7 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Fujifilm provides more tele-photo reach than the Leica. The Q Typ 116 offers the faster maximum aperture.

The Q Typ 116 is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the X100T has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the X100T was succeeded by the Fujifilm X100F.

However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.
