Fujifilm X100F versus Panasonic LX100

The Fujifilm X100F and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100 are two enthusiast cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2017 and September 2014. Both the X100F and the LX100 are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on an APS-C (X100F) and a Four Thirds (LX100) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Panasonic provides 12.7 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Panasonic LX100 is notably smaller (20 percent) than the Fujifilm X100F. Moreover, the LX100 is markedly lighter (16 percent) than the X100F. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X100F nor the LX100 are weather-sealed.

Concerning battery life, the X100F gets 390 shots out of its NP-W126S battery, while the LX100 can take 300 images on a single charge of its DMW-BLG10 power pack.

Any camera purchase will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The LX100 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 31 percent) than the X100F, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X100F vs Panasonic LX100

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X100F features an APS-C sensor and the Panasonic LX100 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the LX100 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X100F has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the LX100 offers a 4:3 aspect.

Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors.

With 24MP, the X100F offers a higher resolution than the LX100 (12.7MP), but the X100F has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.92μm versus 4.21μm for the LX100). However, the X100F is a somewhat more recent model (by 2 years and 4 months) than the LX100, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100F has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the LX100 provides a better video resolution than the X100F. It can shoot movie footage at 4K/30p, while the Fujifilm is limited to 1080/60p.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The X100F has one, while the LX100 does not. While the build-in flash of the X100F is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.

The reported shutter speed and shutter burst refer to the use of the mechanical shutter. In addition, the LX100 features an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (flickering).

The LX100 is equipped with a zoom lens, while the X100F comes with a build-in prime. The LX100 has a 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8 optic and the X100F offers a 35mm f/2.0 (focal lengths in full frame equivalent terms). Hence, the Panasonic provides a wider angle of view at the short end, as well as more tele-photo reach at the long end than the Fujifilm. The LX100 offers the faster maximum aperture.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though.
