Fujifilm X-Pro2 versus Leica S Typ 006

The Fujifilm X-Pro2 and the Leica S (Typ 006) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2016 and September 2012. The X-Pro2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the S Typ 006 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-Pro2) and a medium format (S Typ 006) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 24 megapixel, whereas the Leica provides 37.5 MP. Read on to find out how these two cameras compare with respect to their size, their sensors, their features, and their reception by expert reviewers.

Body comparison: Fujifilm X-Pro2 vs Leica S Typ 006

The side-by-side display below illustrates the physical size and weight of the Fujifilm X-Pro2 and the Leica S Typ 006. The two cameras are presented according to their relative size. Three successive views from the front, the top, and the rear are shown. All size dimensions are rounded to the nearest millimeter. You can also toggle the display to switch to a percentage comparison if you prefer that the measures are being expressed in relative terms (in this case, the camera on the left – the X-Pro2 – represents the basis or 100 percent across all the size and weight measures).

Compare X-Pro2 and S Typ 006 rear

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Leica S Typ 006 is considerably larger (64 percent) than the Fujifilm X-Pro2. Moreover, the S Typ 006 is substantially heavier (155 percent) than the X-Pro2. In this context, it is worth noting that both cameras are splash and dust-proof and can, hence, be used in inclement weather conditions or harsh environments.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Hence, you might want to study the specifications of available lenses in order to get the full picture of the size and weight of the two camera systems.

The following table provides a synthesis of the main physical specifications of the two cameras and other similar ones. In case you want to display and compare another camera duo, just click on the right or left arrow next to the camera that you would like to inspect. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The X-Pro2 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 92 percent) than the S Typ 006, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison: Fujifilm X-Pro2 vs Leica S Typ 006

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-Pro2 features an APS-C sensor and the Leica S Typ 006 a medium format sensor. The sensor area in the S Typ 006 is 267 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 0.8. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Fujifilm X-Pro2 and Leica S Typ 006 sensor measures

With 37.5MP, the S Typ 006 offers a higher resolution than the X-Pro2 (24MP), but the S Typ 006 nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 6.00μm versus 3.92μm for the X-Pro2) due to its larger sensor. However, the X-Pro2 is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 3 months) than the S Typ 006, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X-Pro2 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the S Typ 006 does not. The highest resolution format that the X-Pro2 can use is 1080/60p.

Feature comparison: Fujifilm X-Pro2 vs Leica S Typ 006

Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. For example, the X-Pro2 has an electronic viewfinder (2360k dots), while the S Typ 006 has an optical one. Both systems have their advantages, with the electronic viewfinder making it possible to project supplementary shooting information into the framing view, whereas the optical viewfinder offers lag-free viewing and a very clear framing image. The adjacent table lists some of the other core features of the Fujifilm X-Pro2 and Leica S Typ 006 along with similar information for a selection of comparators. If needed, the dpreview camera hub, for example, contains further detail on the cameras' specs.

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the X-Pro2 is the clear winner of the match-up (10 : 5 points). However, the pertinence of the various camera strengths will differ across photographers, so that you might want to weigh individual camera traits according to their importance for your own imaging needs before making a camera decision.

X-Pro2 10:05 S Typ 006

In any case, while the comparison of the spec-sheets of cameras can offer a general idea of their imaging potential, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the X-Pro2 and the S Typ 006 in practical situations. At times, user reviews, such as those published at amazon, address these issues in a useful manner, but such feedback is on many occasions incomplete, inconsistent, and unreliable. This is why expert reviews are important. The table below summarizes the assessments of some of the best known camera review sites (cameralabs, dpreview, ephotozine, imaging-resource, photographyblog). Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The ratings were established in reference to similarly priced cameras that were available in the market at the time of the review. Thus, a score needs to be put into the context of the launch date and the launch price of the camera, and rating-comparisons among cameras that span long time periods or concern very differently equipped models make little sense. Also, please note that some of the review sites have changed their methodology and reporting over time.
