Fujifilm X-Pro1 vs Olympus E-400
The Fujifilm X-Pro1 and the Olympus E-400 are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2012 and September 2006. The X-Pro1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the E-400 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an APS-C (X-Pro1) and a Four Thirds (E-400) sensor. The Fujifilm has a resolution of 16 megapixels, whereas the Olympus provides 10 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Olympus E-400 is somewhat larger (3 percent) than the Fujifilm X-Pro1. However, the E-400 is slightly lighter (3 percent) than the X-Pro1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-Pro1 nor the E-400 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. A larger imaging sensor will tend to go along with bigger and heavier lenses, although exceptions exist. The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The E-400 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 59 percent) than the X-Pro1, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm X-Pro1 features an APS-C sensor and the Olympus E-400 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the E-400 is 39 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.5 and 2.0. The sensor in the X-Pro1 has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the E-400 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 16MP, the X-Pro1 offers a higher resolution than the E-400 (10MP), but the X-Pro1 nevertheless has marginally larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 4.74μm for the E-400) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the X-Pro1 is a much more recent model (by 5 years and 3 months) than the E-400, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X-Pro1 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm X-Pro1 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the X-Pro1 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 24.5 x 16.3 inches or 62.2 x 41.5 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 19.6 x 13.1 inches or 49.7 x 33.2 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 16.3 x 10.9 inches or 41.5 x 27.6 cm. The corresponding values for the Olympus E-400 are 18.2 x 13.7 inches or 46.3 x 34.7 cm for good quality, 14.6 x 10.9 inches or 37.1 x 27.8 cm for very good quality, and 12.2 x 9.1 inches or 30.9 x 23.2 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Fujifilm X-Pro1 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 200 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-25600. The corresponding ISO settings for the Olympus E-400 are ISO 100 to ISO 1600 (no boost).
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with CMOS (Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. The X-Pro1 uses Fujifilm's X-Trans layout of photosites, while the E-400 employs the more common Bayer array.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The X-Pro1 indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the E-400 does not. The highest resolution format that the X-Pro1 can use is 1080/24p.
Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. For example, the X-Pro1 has an electronic viewfinder (1440k dots), while the E-400 has an optical one. One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The E-400 has one, while the X-Pro1 does not. While the built-in flash of the E-400 is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The X-Pro1 writes its imaging data to SDXC cards, while the E-400 uses Compact Flash or xD Picture cards. The E-400 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the X-Pro1 only has one slot.

Studio photographers will appreciate that the Fujifilm X-Pro1 (unlike the E-400) features a PC Sync socket, so that professional strobe lights can be controlled by the camera.
Both the X-Pro1 and the E-400 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The E-400 was replaced by the Olympus E-410, while the X-Pro1 was followed by the Fujifilm X-Pro2. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though.
