Fujifilm X-A1 versus Fujifilm X100T

The Fujifilm X-A1 and the Fujifilm X100T are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in September 2013 and September 2014. The X-A1 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, while the X100T is a fixed lens compact. Both cameras are equipped with an APS-C sensor. Both cameras offer a resolution of 16 megapixel.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Fujifilm X100T is notably larger (20 percent) than the Fujifilm X-A1. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the X-A1 nor the X100T are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the X100T has a lens build in, whereas the X-A1 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

Sensor comparison

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tent to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor, but their sensors differ slightly in size. They nevertheless have the same format factor of 1.5. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

Even though the X-A1 has a slightly larger sensor, both cameras offer the same resolution of 16 megapixel. This implies that the X-A1 has a lower pixel density and larger individual pixels (with a pixel pitch of 4.80μm versus 4.80μm for the X100T), which gives it a potential advantage in terms of light gathering capacity. It should, however, be noted that the X100T is a somewhat more recent model (by 11 months) than the X-A1, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the X100T has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration have a sensor with sufficiently fast read-out times for moving pictures, but the X100T provides a faster frame rate than the X-A1. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the X-A1 is limited to 1080/30p.

Feature comparison

Beyond body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a range of features. Both the X-A1 and the X100T have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The X-A1 was replaced by the Fujifilm X-A2, while the X100T was followed by the Fujifilm X100F.

Summary

So what conclusions can be drawn? Which of the two cameras – the Fujifilm X-A1 or the Fujifilm X100T – has the upper hand? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.


Advantages of the Fujifilm X-A1:

  • Better moiré control: Has an anti-alias filter to avoid artificial patterns to appear in images.
  • More flexible LCD: Has a tilting screen for odd-angle shots in landscape orientation.
  • More flexible: Accepts interchangeable lenses, so that lens characteristics can be altered.

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the X100T comes out slightly ahead of the X-A1 (6 : 5 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points.

Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. A score, therefore, has to be seen in close connection to the price and market introduction time of the camera, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
