Fujifilm GFX 100 vs Kodak S-1

The Fujifilm GFX 100 and the Kodak PIXPRO S-1 are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in May 2019 and January 2012. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Kodak S-1 is considerably smaller (65 percent) than the Fujifilm GFX 100. Moreover, the S-1 is substantially lighter (78 percent) than the GFX 100. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The S-1 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 97 percent) than the GFX 100, which puts it into a different market segment. Normally, street prices remain initially close to the MSRP, but after a couple of months, the first discounts appear. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm GFX 100 features a medium format sensor and the Kodak S-1 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the S-1 is 84 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 2.0. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

With 101.8MP, the GFX 100 offers a higher resolution than the S-1 (16.1MP), but the GFX 100 nevertheless has marginally larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 3.74μm for the S-1) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the GFX 100 is a much more recent model (by 7 years and 4 months) than the S-1, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the GFX 100 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm GFX 100 implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the GFX 100 for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 58.2 x 43.7 inch or 147.9 x 110.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 46.6 x 34.9 inch or 118.3 x 88.8 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 38.8 x 29.1 inch or 98.6 x 74 cm. The corresponding values for the Kodak S-1 are 23.2 x 17.4 inch or 58.9 x 44.2 cm for good quality, 18.6 x 13.9 inch or 47.1 x 35.4 cm for very good quality, and 15.5 x 11.6 inch or 39.3 x 29.5 cm for excellent quality prints.

The GFX 100 has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.

The Fujifilm GFX 100 has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Kodak PIXPRO S-1 are ISO 200 to ISO 12800 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, but the GFX 100 provides a higher video resolution than the S-1. One feature that is present on the GFX 100, but is missing on the S-1 is a top-level LCD. While being, of course, smaller than the rear screen, the control panel conveys some of the essential shooting information and can be convenient for quick and easy settings verification.

The S-1 has an articulated screen that can be turned to be front-facing. This characteristic will be appreciated by vloggers and photographers who are interested in taking selfies. In contrast, the GFX 100 does not have a selfie-screen.

The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, the GFX 100 is one of those camera that have an additional electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).

The Fujifilm GFX 100 has an intervalometer built-in. This enables the photographer to capture time lapse sequences, such as flower blooming, a sunset or moon rise, without purchasing an external camera trigger and related software.

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the GFX 100 and the S-1 write their files to SDXC cards. The GFX 100 features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the S-1 only has one slot. The GFX 100 supports UHS-II cards (on both slots), while the S-1 can use UHS-I cards.

It is notable that the GFX 100 has a microphone port, which is missing on the S-1. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
