Canon T2i vs Leica Digilux 3
The Canon EOS Rebel T2i (called Canon 550D in some regions) and the Leica Digilux 3 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in February 2010 and September 2006. Both are DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras that are based on an APS-C (T2i) and a Four Thirds (Digilux 3) sensor. The Canon has a resolution of 17.9 megapixels, whereas the Leica provides 7.4 MP.

Any camera decision will naturally be influenced heavily by the price. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The T2i was launched at a markedly lower price (by 53 percent) than the Digilux 3, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon T2i features an APS-C sensor and the Leica Digilux 3 a Four Thirds sensor. The sensor area in the Digilux 3 is 32 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.6 and 2.0. The sensor in the T2i has a native 3:2 aspect ratio, while the one in the Digilux 3 offers a 4:3 aspect.
With 17.9MP, the T2i offers a higher resolution than the Digilux 3 (7.4MP), but the T2i has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 4.31μm versus 5.51μm for the Digilux 3). However, the T2i is a much more recent model (by 3 years and 4 months) than the Digilux 3, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels.
The resolution advantage of the Canon T2i implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the T2i for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 25.9 x 17.3 inches or 65.8 x 43.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 20.7 x 13.8 inches or 52.7 x 35.1 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 17.3 x 11.5 inches or 43.9 x 29.3 cm. The corresponding values for the Leica Digilux 3 are 15.7 x 11.8 inches or 39.8 x 29.9 cm for good quality, 12.5 x 9.4 inches or 31.9 x 23.9 cm for very good quality, and 10.5 x 7.8 inches or 26.6 x 19.9 cm for excellent quality prints.
The Canon EOS Rebel T2i has a native sensitivity range from ISO 100 to ISO 6400, which can be extended to ISO 100-12800. The corresponding ISO settings for the Leica Digilux 3 are ISO 100 to ISO 1600 (no boost).

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The T2i indeed provides movie recording capabilities, while the Digilux 3 does not. The highest resolution format that the T2i can use is 1080/30p.
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The T2i and the Digilux 3 are similar in the sense that both have an optical viewfinder. The latter is useful for getting a clear image for framing even in brightly lit environments. The viewfinders of both cameras offer the same field of view (95%), but the viewfinder of the T2i has a higher magnification than the one of the Digilux 3 (0.54x vs 0.47x), so that the size of the image transmitted appears closer to the size seen with the naked human eye. Both the T2i and the Digilux 3 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The T2i was replaced by the Canon T3i, while the Digilux 3 does not have a direct successor.
