Canon SX710 vs T6

The Canon PowerShot SX710 HS and the Canon EOS Rebel T6 (labelled Canon 1300D in some countries) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2015 and March 2016. The SX710 is a fixed lens compact, while the T6 is a DSLR. The cameras are based on a 1/2.3-inch (SX710) and an APS-C (T6) sensor. The SX710 has a resolution of 20.2 megapixels, whereas the T6 provides 17.9 MP.

If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon T6 is considerably larger (75 percent) than the Canon SX710. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the SX710 nor the T6 are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the SX710 has a lens built in, whereas the T6 is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. The SX710 was launched at a lower price than the T6, despite having a lens built in. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

Sensor comparison

The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. All other things equal, a large sensor will have larger individual pixel-units that offer better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon SX710 features a 1/2.3-inch sensor and the Canon T6 an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the T6 is 1086 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 5.6 and 1.6. The sensor in the SX710 has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the T6 offers a 3:2 aspect.

In terms of chip-set technology, the SX710 uses a more advanced image processing engine (DIGIC 6) than the T6 (DIGIC 4+), with benefits for noise reduction, color accuracy, and processing speed.

Canon SX710 and Canon T6 sensor measures

Despite having a smaller sensor, the Canon SX710 offers a higher resolution of 20.2 megapixels, compared with 17.9 MP of the Canon T6. This megapixels advantage comes at the cost of a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 1.18μm versus 4.31μm for the T6). Moreover, it should be noted that the T6 is a somewhat more recent model (by 1 year and 2 months) than the SX710, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that the SX710 has no anti-alias filter installed, so that it can capture all the detail its sensor resolves.

The Canon PowerShot SX710 HS has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 3200. The corresponding ISO settings for the Canon EOS Rebel T6 are ISO 100 to ISO 6400, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 100-12800.

Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but can also record movies. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the SX710 provides a higher frame rate than the T6. It can shoot video footage at 1080/60p, while the T6 is limited to 1080/30p.

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the SX710 and the T6 write their files to SDXC cards. The SX710 supports UHS-I cards (Ultra High Speed data transfer of up to 104 MB/s), while the T6 cannot take advantage of Ultra High Speed SD cards.

It is notable that the T6 has a hotshoe, which makes it possible to easily attach optional accessories, such as an external flash gun. The SX710 does not feature such an accessory-socket.

Both the SX710 and the T6 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The SX710 was replaced by the Canon SX720, while the T6 was followed by the Canon T7.
