Canon M10 versus Canon M3
The Canon EOS M10 and the Canon EOS M3 are two digital cameras that were announced, respectively, in October 2015 and February 2015. Both the EOS M10 and the EOS M3 are mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras that are equipped with an APS-C sensor. The EOS M10 has a resolution of 17.9 megapixel, whereas the EOS M3 provides 24 MP.
The physical size and weight of the Canon M10 and the Canon M3 are illustrated in the side-by-side display below. Three consecutive views from the front, the top, and the rear side are shown. All width, height and depth measures are rounded to the nearest millimeter. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon M3 is somewhat larger (4 percent) than the Canon M10. Moreover, the EOS M3 is markedly heavier (22 percent) than the EOS M10. Cameras that are intended for semi-professional or professional use are sometimes a bit bulkier in order to provide them with the necessary ruggedness. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the EOS M10 nor the EOS M3 are weather-sealed.
The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete since they do not consider the interchangeable lenses that both of these cameras require. Hence, you might want to study the specifications of available lenses in order to get the full picture of the size and weight of the two camera systems.

The listed prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. The EOS M10 was launched at a markedly lower price (by 27 percent) than the EOS M3, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.
The size of the sensor inside a digital camera is one of the key determinants of image quality. A large sensor will tend to have larger individual pixels that provide better low-light sensitivity, wider dynamic range, and richer color depth than smaller pixel-units in a sensor of the same technological generation. Furthermore, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more possibilities to use shallow depth-of-field in order to isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be more expensive and lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Both cameras under consideration feature an APS-C sensor and have a format factor (sometimes also referred to as "crop factor") of 1.6. Within the spectrum of camera sensors, this places the review cameras among the medium-sized sensor cameras that aim to strike a balance between image quality and portability. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.
While the two cameras under review share the same sensor size, the EOS M3 offers a higher resolution of 24 megapixel, compared with 17.9 MP of the EOS M10. This megapixel advantage translates into a 16 percent gain in linear resolution. On the other hand, these sensor specs imply that the EOS M3 has a higher pixel density and a smaller size of the individual pixel (with a pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.30μm for the EOS M10). In this context, it should be noted, however, that the EOS M10 is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the EOS M3, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that at least partly compensate for the smaller pixel size.
Since 2007, DXO Mark has published sensor performance measurements that have been derived using a consistent methodology. This service assesses and scores the color depth ("DXO Portrait"), dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports") of camera sensors, and also publishes an overall camera score. Of the two cameras under consideration, the EOS M3 has a markedly higher DXO score than the EOS M10 (overall score 7 points higher), which will translate into better image quality. The advantage is based on 0.6 bits higher color depth, 0.4 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.6 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. The two cameras under consideration both have sensors whose read-out speed is fast enough to capture moving pictures, and both provide the same movie specifications (1080/30p).
Apart from body and sensor, cameras can and do differ across a variety of features. The EOS M10 and the EOS M3 are similar in the sense that neither of the two has a viewfinder. The images are, thus, framed using live view on the rear LCD. Both the EOS M10 and the EOS M3 have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on ebay. The EOS M3 was replaced by the Canon M6, while the EOS M10 was followed by the Canon M100.
So what conclusions can be drawn? Is there a clear favorite between the Canon M10 and the Canon M10? Below is a summary of the relative strengths of each of the two contestants.
Reasons to prefer the Canon EOS M10:
- Less heavy: Is lighter (by 65g or 18 percent) and hence easier to carry around.
- More affordable: Was introduced into a lower priced category (27 percent cheaper at launch).
- More modern: Is somewhat more recent (announced 8 months after the EOS M3).
Arguments in favor of the Canon EOS M3:
- More detail: Has more megapixels (24 vs 17.9MP), which boosts linear resolution by 16%.
- Better image quality: Scores markedly higher (7 points) in the DXO overall evaluation.
- Better low-light sensitivity: Can shoot in dim conditions (0.6 stops ISO advantage).
- More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in October 2015).
If the count of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a measure, the EOS M3 comes out slightly ahead of the EOS M10 (4 : 3 points). However, the relative importance of the various individual camera aspects will vary according to personal preferences and needs, so that you might like to apply corresponding weights to the particular features.
In any case, while the comparison of technical specifications can provide a useful overview of the capabilities of different cameras, it says nothing about, for example, the handling, responsiveness, and overall imaging quality of the EOS M10 and the EOS M3 in practical situations. User reviews, such as those found at amazon, can sometimes inform about these issues, but such feedback is often incomplete, inconsistent, and biased. This is where reviews by experts come in. Care should be taken when interpreting the review scores above, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning. It should also be noted that some of the review sites have over time altered the way they render their verdicts.
