Canon G5 X versus Canon T6i

The Canon PowerShot G5 X and the Canon EOS Rebel T6i (labelled Canon 750D in some countries) are two digital cameras that were officially introduced, respectively, in October 2015 and February 2015. The G5X is a fixed lens compact, while the T6i is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an one-inch (G5X) and an APS-C (T6i) sensor. The G5X has a resolution of 20 megapixel, whereas the T6i provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon T6i is considerably larger (57 percent) than the Canon G5 X. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the G5X nor the T6i are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G5X has a lens build in, whereas the T6i is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the G5X gets 210 shots out of its NB-13L battery, while the T6i can take 440 images on a single charge of its LP-E17 power pack.

The camera’s price is obviously a critical decision-making factor. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices give an idea on the placement of the camera in the maker’s lineup and the broader market. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon G5 X vs Canon T6i

The imaging sensor is at the core of digital cameras and its size is one of the main determining factors of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Further, a large sensor camera will give the photographer additional creative options when using shallow depth-of-field to isolate a subject from its background. On the downside, larger sensors tend to be associated with larger, more expensive camera bodies and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G5 X features an one-inch sensor and the Canon T6i an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the T6i is 186 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 2.7 and 1.6. Both cameras have a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 3:2.

With 24MP, the T6i offers a higher resolution than the G5X (20MP), but the T6i nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 2.41μm for the G5X) due to its larger sensor. However, the G5X is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the T6i, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

The G5X is a current model that online retailers, such as amazon, will have in stock. In contrast, the T6i has been discontinued (but it can be found pre-owned on eBay). As a replacement in the same line of cameras, the T6i was succeeded by the Canon T7i.

So how do things add up? Which of the two cameras – the Canon G5 X or the Canon T6i – has the upper hand? The listing below highlights the relative strengths of the two models.


Arguments in favor of the Canon PowerShot G5 X:

  • Better sound control: Has a headphone port that enables audio monitoring while recording.
  • More framing info: Has an electronic viewfinder that displays shooting data.

  • Brighter framing: Features an optical viewfinder for clear, lag-free composition.
  • Faster shutter: Has higher mechanical shutter speed (4000/sec vs 2000/sec) to freeze action.
  • More flexible: Makes it possible to change lenses and thus to use specialty optics.
  • Longer lasting: Gets more shots (440 versus 210) out of a single battery charge.
  • More heavily discounted: Has been on the market for longer (launched in February 2015).

If the number of relative strengths (bullet points above) is taken as a guide, the G5X comes out slightly ahead of the T6i (8 : 7 points). However, the relevance of individual strengths will vary across photographers, so that you might want to apply your own weighing scheme to the summary points when reflecting and deciding on a new camera.
