Canon G1 X versus Canon T6i

The Canon PowerShot G1 X and the Canon EOS Rebel T6i (labelled Canon 750D in some countries) are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in January 2012 and February 2015. The G1X is a fixed lens compact, while the T6i is a DSLR. The cameras are based on an 1.5-inch (G1X) and an APS-C (T6i) sensor. The G1X has a resolution of 14.2 megapixel, whereas the T6i provides 24 MP. If the front view area (width x height) of the cameras is taken as an aggregate measure of their size, the Canon T6i is notably larger (41 percent) than the Canon G1 X. In this context, it is worth noting that neither the G1X nor the T6i are weather-sealed.

The above size and weight comparisons are to some extent incomplete and possibly misleading, as the G1X has a lens build in, whereas the T6i is an interchangeable lens camera that requires a separate lens. Concerning battery life, the G1X gets 250 shots out of its NB-10L battery, while the T6i can take 440 images on a single charge of its LP-E17 power pack.

The price is, of course, an important factor in any camera decision. The listed launch prices provide an indication of the market segment that the manufacturer of the cameras have been targeting. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down. Then, after the new model is out, very good deals can frequently be found on the pre-owned market.

 

Sensor comparison: Canon G1 X vs Canon T6i

The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.

Of the two cameras under consideration, the Canon G1 X features an 1.5-inch sensor and the Canon T6i an APS-C sensor. The sensor area in the T6i is 27 percent bigger. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 1.85 and 1.6. The sensor in the G1X has a native 4:3 aspect ratio, while the one in the T6i offers a 3:2 aspect.

With 24MP, the T6i offers a higher resolution than the G1X (14.2MP), but the T6i has smaller individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.72μm versus 4.30μm for the G1X). Yet, the T6i is a much more recent model (by 3 years) than the G1X, and its sensor will have benefitted from technological advances during this time that enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixel-units.

G1X versus T6i MP

For most cameras, data on sensor performance has been reported by DXO Mark. This service is based on lab testing and assigns an overall score to each camera sensor, as well as ratings for dynamic range ("DXO Landscape"), color depth ("DXO Portrait"), and low-light sensitivity ("DXO Sports"). Of the two cameras under consideration, the T6i offers substantially better image quality than the G1X (overall score 11 points higher). The advantage is based on 1 bits higher color depth, 1.2 EV in additional dynamic range, and 0.5 stops in additional low light sensitivity. Many modern cameras are not only capable of taking still images, but also of capturing video footage. Both cameras under consideration are equipped with sensors that have a sufficiently high read-out speed for moving images, but the T6i provides a faster frame rate than the G1X. It can shoot movie footage at 1080/60p, while the G1X is limited to 1080/24p.

Both the G1X and the T6i have been discontinued, but can regularly be found used on eBay. The G1X was replaced by the Canon G1X Mark II, while the T6i was followed by the Canon T7i.

Advantages of the Canon PowerShot G1 X:

The review scores listed above should be treated with care, though. The assessments were made in relation to similar cameras of the same technological generation. Hence, a score should always be seen in the context of the camera's market launch date and its price, and comparing ratings of very distinct cameras or ones that are far apart in terms of their release date have little meaning.
